The sun is the only object in our solar system that produces its own light. As its light shines on Earth and the moon, it illuminates half of the moon at all times. As the moon orbits Earth, we see different portions of its lit side, creating the Moon's phases — from new moon to full moon and back again. This cycle repeats about every 29.5 days.

The eight moon phases are: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent.
